Need help with Snippr? Start with the troubleshooting steps below, then reach out if something is still not working.

Troubleshooting

Most issues with Snippr fall into one of two categories: a missing Accessibility permission or an app-specific restriction. Work through the steps below before reaching out.

Accessibility Permission

Snippr requires macOS Accessibility permission to detect abbreviations and expand them. Without this permission, no snippets will expand anywhere.

How to grant the permission

  1. Open System Settings (or System Preferences on older macOS).
  2. Go to Privacy & Security → Accessibility.
  3. Find Snippr in the list and turn the toggle on.
  4. If Snippr is not listed, click the + button and add it from your Applications folder.
  5. Quit and relaunch Snippr from the menu bar icon.

The toggle is on but snippets still won't expand

  1. Turn the toggle off, wait a moment, then turn it back on. macOS sometimes caches a stale permission state.
  2. Quit Snippr completely (right-click the menu bar icon → Quit), then relaunch it.
  3. If you recently updated macOS, open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Accessibility and confirm Snippr is still listed and enabled.

Snippets Not Expanding

If Accessibility is granted but a specific snippet is not expanding, check the following.

Snippr is paused

Click the Snippr icon in the menu bar. If it shows Paused, click Resume to re-enable expansion.

The abbreviation doesn't match

Triggers are case-sensitive and must be typed exactly. Open Snippr's manager window and check the abbreviation for the snippet. For example, ;ty and ;TY are treated as different triggers.

The app prevents text expansion

Some apps use secure input mode or restrict third-party accessibility tools:

  • Password fields — macOS blocks all third-party text injection in password fields by design. This is intentional and cannot be changed.
  • Terminal / SSH sessions — expansion may not work inside raw terminal input or remote sessions.
  • Electron apps (Slack desktop, VS Code, etc.) — these apps sometimes intercept keystrokes before Snippr can process them. Try typing the abbreviation slowly or using the web version of the app instead.
  • Virtual machines — text injection into VM guest windows is generally not supported.
  • Browser extensions or password managers — some extensions lock input fields and block expansion.

Export diagnostics for further investigation

If you cannot identify the cause, use Snippr's built-in diagnostics export: open the app, go to Settings, and tap Export Diagnostics. This creates a local report you can review and optionally send to support.

FAQ

Does Snippr store what I type?

No. Snippr watches for saved abbreviations and replaces them. It does not log raw keystrokes, save clipboard contents, or transmit any text to a server. Everything stays on your Mac.

Why does Snippr need Accessibility permission?

macOS requires Accessibility access for any app that reads keyboard input system-wide or injects text into other apps. Snippr uses it only to detect abbreviations and perform expansions — nothing else.

How do I add a new snippet?

Click the Snippr menu bar icon and choose Manage Snippets. In the manager window, click the + button, enter a trigger abbreviation (e.g., ;email) and the expansion text, then save.

Can I organise snippets into groups?

Yes. Snippr supports categories. In the manager window you can create categories (such as Work, Personal, or Developer) and assign snippets to them.

Does Snippr work with all apps on my Mac?

Snippr works in the vast majority of text fields across macOS apps. A small number of apps with secure input modes, strict accessibility sandboxes, or remote desktop surfaces may prevent expansion. See the Snippets Not Expanding section above.

Is this a subscription?

No. Snippr is a one-time purchase. The launch price is $4.99; the standard lifetime price is $9.99. No recurring fees.

How do I get a refund?

Snippr is sold through the Mac App Store. Refund requests are handled by Apple. Visit reportaproblem.apple.com and select your purchase to request a refund.

How do I completely uninstall Snippr?

  1. Quit Snippr from the menu bar icon.
  2. Open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Accessibility and remove Snippr from the list.
  3. Drag Snippr from your Applications folder to the Trash.
  4. To remove stored snippet data, delete the Snippr container in ~/Library/Containers/.

I updated macOS and Snippr stopped working

A macOS update can revoke previously granted Accessibility permissions. Open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Accessibility, confirm Snippr is still listed and enabled, and toggle the permission off and back on. Then quit and relaunch Snippr.
